2013 Brazil Junior & Cadet Open - No Great Troubles for Principal Boys but Leading Ladies Stumble in First Stage

The leading names in the Junior Boys’ Singles event at the Brazil Junior and Cadet Open in Rio de Janeiro duly finished in first places in their respective groups on Friday 13th September 2013.

Brazil’s Hugo Calderano, Hong Kong’s Hung Ka Tak, the Czech Republic’s David Reitspies and Chinese Taipei’s Yang Heng-Wei, the top four seeds, duly topped their groups.

Equally, it was first place for the next four in the pecking order.

Vitor Ishiy, also from Brazil, secured top place in his group as did Portugal’s Diogo Chen, Hong Kong’s Lam Siu Hang and Chinese Taipei’s Sun Chia-Hung.

Polish Problems
The only player of note to experience problems in the group stage of the Junior Boys’ Singles event was Poland’s Patryk Zatowka, the no.11 seed; he finished in second place in his group.

In his opening contest he was beaten by Argentina’s Diego Teplitzky in three straight games (14-12, 11-8, 11-9) but then later recovered to overcome Brazil’s Enzo Nakashima by a similar margin to which he had experienced defeat (11-0, 12-10, 11-5), the latter having earlier accounted for Diego Teplitzky in four games (9-11, 14-12, 14-12, 12-10).

All three accounted for Pedro Rodrigues of Brazil; thus games ratio decided the leading places.

First place went to Diego Teplitzky (4:3), second place to Patryk Zatowka (3:3) with Enzo Nakashima (3:4) the player to miss out on a place in the main draw. Players finishing in first and second places in each group advanced to the main draw.

Different Scenario
However, in the first phase of the Junior Girls’ Singles event, it was a different scenario.

Both Germany’s Wan Yuan, the no.5 seed and Canada’s Anqi Luo, the no.7 seed, had to settle for second places in their respective groups.

Wang Yuan was beaten by Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yu-Chiao (11-5, 12-10, 15-13) who duly finished in first place in the group; whilst Anqi Luo suffered defeat at the hands of Singapore’s Yang Herng-Hwee (11-5, 13-11, 7-11, 11-9). Yang Herng-Hwee topped the group.

First Place
Otherwise for the leading names in the Junior Girls’ Singles event, it was first place in the group.

Germany’s Nina Mittelham and Chantal Mantz topped their groups as did the Chinese Taipei duo of Chiu Ssu-Hua and Huang Yu-Wen.

Similarly, there was success for Brazil’s Caroline Kumahara and Charlotte Carey of Wales; all could sleep soundly.

Same Situation
Second place for two highly seeded players in the group stage of the Junior Girls’ Singles event, it was the same in the Cadet Boys’ Singles competition.

Brazil’s Lucas Prandi and Singapore’s Tay Ming Han Maxxe, the respective fifth and sixth seeds, both had to settle for runners up spot and there was nearly a third. Ethan Poh Shao Feng, also from Singapore and the no.4 seed, only secured first place on games ratio.

Games Ratio
Ethan Poh Shao Feng was beaten by Brazil’s Pedro Henrique Rodrigues in five games (9-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-6, 13-11) but then recovered to overcome Matheus Shimoki, also from Brazil, in three straight games (11-9, 11-6, 11-6). However, in the concluding match in the group, Matheus Shimoki overcame Pedro Henrique Rodrigues four games (11-2, 11-5, 8-11, 12-10).

Thus it was first place for Ethan Poh Shao Feng (5:3) with Matheus Shimoki in second spot (5:4) and Pedro Henrique Rodrigues third (4:5).

Decided Fate
Similarly, games ratio decided the fate of Lucas Prandi. He beat Brazilian colleague Rodrigo Yonesaki (15-13, 11-5, 5-11, 11-9) but experienced defeat when facing Singapore’s Lucas Tan (8-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-5); both contests were decided in four games.

In the concluding match in the group matters were decided in five games; Rodrigo Yonesaki overcame Lucas Tan (11-8, 6-11, 9-11, 17-15, 11-8).

Therefore on games ratio it was first place for Lucas Tan (5:4) with Lucas Prandi being in second spot (4:4) and Rodrigo Yonesaki third (4:5).

Clear Cut
Meanwhile, for Tay Ming Han Maxxe the decision was clear cut; he was beaten by the host nation’s Enzo Nakashima (5-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-6) who duly topped the group by overcoming colleague Guilherme Teodoro (11-7, 11-3, 12-10). Tay Ming Han Maxxe duly secured second place by beating Guilherme Teodoro (11-5, 12-10, 11-9).

Brazil’s Gustavo Yokota, Hong Kong’s Kwan Man Ho and Argentina’s Horacio Cifuentes, the top three seeds all finished in first place in their groups as did Vitor Santos, also from Brazil, the no.7 seed.

Top Four, Top Place

Casualties amongst the leading cadet boys but no such troubles for the girls; the top four seeds all secured first places in their respective group. It was a relatively smooth passage for the Chinese Taipei duo of Lee En-Chi and Chen Ting-Ting as it was for Brazil’s Leticia Nakada and Bruna Takahashi.
