Silver for Hong Kong in Rio de Janeiro
It was disappointment for Hong Kong in the final of the Junior Boys’ Team event at the Brazil Junior and Cadet Open in Rio de Janeiro on the evening of Thursday 12th September 2013.
The trio of Hung Ka Tak, Lam Siu Hang and Li Hon Ming found the host nation trio of Hugo Calderano, Vitor Ishiy and Massao Kohatsu very much in form.
A three-two defeat was the order of the day.
Vitor Ishiy beat Hung Ka Tak (11-7, 11-7, 11-8), Hugo Calderano defeated Lam Siu Hang (11-2, 11-4, 11-5) with Massao Kohatsu rising to the occasion to overcome Li Hon Ming (9-11, 11-6, 3-11, 11-7, 11-4).
At the semi-final stage, Hong Kong had beaten the combination of Germany’s Kilian Ort and Qiu Dang who lined up alongside Theodore Tran of the United States.
Mainstay of the victory was Hung Ka Tak. He beat both Qiu Dang (11-7, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9) and Kilian Ort (11-5, 11-6, 6-11, 11-5) with the one further Hong Kong success coming from Li Hon Ming.
In the third match of the duel he accounted for Theodore Tran (11-7, 11-6, 11-3). The one win for the defeated was recorded in the match of the contest; Kilian Ort beat Lam Siu Hang (7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 4-11, 12-10).
At the semi-final stage Brazil had overcome the Chinese Taipei duo of Sun Chia-Hung and Yang Heng-Wei, in a tension packed three-two victory over the outfit that was completed by Puerto Rico’s Brian Afanador.
Hugo Calderano accounted for Sun Chia-Hung in three straight games in the open match of the fixture (11-8, 11-9, 11-5), before in the vital concluding contest of the duel accounting for Yang Heng-Hei (11-5, 11-8, 11-5).
The one further win for Brazil came in the second match of the contest with Vitor Ishiy defeating Yang Hei-Wei (11-7, 14-16, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7). It was two defeats for Yang Heng-Wei, the player who heads both the ITTF Junior Circuit Standings and the Road to Nanjing listing.
Successes for the defeated came in the third and fourth matches of the fixture with Brian Afandor beating Massao Kohatsu (11-7, 11-7, 11-8) and Sun Chia-Hung overcoming Vitor Ishiy (11-8, 11-6, 11-7).
Success for Brazil in the Junior Boys’ Team event but in the counterpart Junior Girls’ Team competition Chinese Taipei, the second seeds held sway.
The trio comprising Chiu Ssu-Hua, Huang Yu-Wen and Huang Yu-Chiao overcame the Brazilian outfit formed by Caroline Kumahara, Leticia Nakada and Bruna Takahashi by three matches to nil in the final.
At the semi-final stage both teams had recorded three-one victories. Chinese Taipei overcame the top seeded German outfit of Nina Mittelham, Chantal Mantz and and Wan Yuan; whilst Brazil ended the hopes of the combination formed by Puerto Rico’s Melanie Diaz and Daniely Rios who combined with Peru’s Francesca Vargas.
Backbone of the Brazilian semi-final victory was Caroline Kumahara who accounted for Daniely Rios (11-9, 11-5, 11-7) and Francesca Vargas (11-5, 11-5, 11-3) with the one remaining win coming from Bruna Takahashi, in the third match of the encounter, she overcame Melanie Diaz (6-11, 11-3, 11-9, 10-12, 11-6).
The one success for the vanquished was recorded by Francesca Vargas; in the opening match of the contest she beat Leticia Nakada in four games (4-11, 11-7, 11-9, 12-10).
Similarly for Chinese Taipei it was defeat in the opening match and then three in a row.
Nina Mittleham beat Chiu Ssu-Hua (11-6, 11-6, 11-7) but that was the end of German success. Chantal Mantz suffered defeats at the hands of Huang Yu-Wen (5-11, 13-11, 11-4, 11-7) and in opposition to Chiu Ssu-Hua (11-7, 11-4, 11-3); whilst Wang Yan was beaten in the third match of the contest by Huang Yu-Chiao (12-10, 10-12, 12-10, 11-8).
Team events over, attention now turns to the individual events which commence on Friday 13th September.
