Lee Ka Yee Shines in Chinese Taipei, Beats Fifth Seed in Style

Lee Ka Yee was very much the player in form for Hong Kong on the third day of play, Friday 26th July 2013, at the Chinese Taipei Junior and Cadet Open.

In the Cadet Girls’ Singles event she upset the pecking order by overcoming the host association’s Hung Hung, the no.5 seed in the group stage of proceedings.

After accounting for Singapore’s Eunice Lim (8-11, 11-3, 11-9, 11-6) and Chinese Taipei’s Wen Ruei-Ling (11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-6), she caused one of the biggest surprises of the day by defeating Hung Hung.

Not only did she beat Hung Hung, she beat the Chinese Taipei teenager in a most impressive manner; she posted a straight games victory (11-8, 14-12, 11-9).

First place in the group in the Cadet Girls’ Singles event, it was the same for Vaness Leung Tsz Ching and Liu Qi.

Vaness Leung Tsz Ching beat Singapore’s Tan En Hui (11-9, 11-7, 5-11, 11-8), before defeating the Chinese Taipei duo of Lee Yu-Peng (11-8, 5-11, 11-8, 11-9) and Chiang Chih-Wei (11-4, 11-6, 11-6).

Fine form from Vaness Leung Tsz Ching and also from Liu Qi; she accounted for Singapore’s Zhang Wanling (11-5, 11-6, 11-4), before emulating Vaness Leung Tsz Ching by beating a brace of host nation adversaries.

She overcame Kuo Chia-Yun (6-11, 11-8, 11-2, 11-7) and Lo Chiao-Chen (11-2, 11-6, 11-2).

Impressive performances from Lee Ka Yee, Vaness Leung Tsz Ching and Liu Qi; it was the same from Hong Kong’s leading lady in the age group.

Imperiously, she beat the Chinese Taipei trio of Yen Lin-Chen (11-8, 8-11, 11-3, 11-9), Wu Yi-Hua (11-8, 8-11, 11-3, 11-9) and Yu Hsiu-Ting (10-12, 11-8, 11-4, 11-6) to finish in first place in her group.

However, the first stage of the Junior Girls’ Singles event, it was disappointment for Minnie Soo Wai-Yam.

The no.3 seed, she was beaten by Chinese Taipei’s Chih De-Rong by the very narrowest of margins (8-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-7, 14-12). Defeat but by overcoming Liao Shih-Yun, also from Chinese Taipei (11-4, 12-10, 11-9) she secured second place in the group and a main draw berth.

Chih De-Rong who overcame Liao Shih-Yun (11-7, 9-11, 6-11, 11-5, 11-9) in the opening match in the group finished in first place.

Players finishing in first and second places in each group advance to the main draw.

Disappointment for Minnie Soo Wai Yam in the first stage of the Junior Girls’ Singles event but it was joy for Mak Tze Wing; she finished in first place in her group.

She was beaten in her concluding group phase match by Chinese Taipei’s Lin Po-Hsuan in five games (5-11, 13-15, 11-3, 11-9, 11-1) but one match earlier had overcame Lee Yu-Peng, also from Chinese Taipei in three straight games (11-6, 11-4, 11-6).

In the opening match of the group Lee Yu-Peng had beaten Lin Po-Hsuan in four games (9-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-9). Thus Mak Tze Wing topped the group on games ratio (5:3) with Lin Po-Hsuan in second place (4:5) and Lee Yu-Peng third (3:4).

Places in the main draw of the Junior Girls’ Singles event for Minnie Soo Wai Yam and Mak Tze Wing; it was the same for Leung Ka Wan, Lee Ka Yee, Leung Ka Sin and Vaness Tsz Ching. They duly finished in second place in their respective groups.
