Four More Medals for Hong Kong to Add to ITTF Cadet Challenge Collection

Hung Ka Tak, Leung Tsz Ching and Soo Wai Yam all clinched medals as matters came to a conclusion at the ITTF World Cadet Challenge in Guam on Sunday 4th November 2012.

Earlier in the week, Hung Ka Tak had been a member of the Asian outfit that won Boys’ Team gold, joining forces with China’s Song Xu, Japan’s Kohei Sambe and Korea’s Cho Seungmin.

Similarly Soo Wai Yam had lined up alongside China’s He Zhuojia, Japan’s Mima Ito and Thailand’s Tamolwan Khetkuen to secure Girls’ Team gold; whilst Leung Tsz Ching had won a bronze medal in the Girls’ Team event representing the ITTF World Hopes Team.

She was on duty with Romania’s Adina Diaconu, Thailand’s Monapsorn Saritapirak and Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi.

On the concluding day of action, Hung Ka Tak, having secured a Boys’ Singles semi-final place with wins over Sweden’s Anton Kallberg (11-6, 11-5, 11-6, 12-14, 11-6) and Argentina’s Fermin Tenti (11-9, 11-6, 11-8, 12-14, 11-9), was beaten by China’s Song Xu (11-5, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9).

Song Xu progressed to clinch the title beating Japan’s Kohei Samba in the final (6-11, 10-12, 11-3, 11-7, 6-11, 11-7, 11-5); whilst for Hung Ka Tak it was a very creditable third place finish.

He beat Korea’s Cho Seungmin in the play-off contest (7-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-5); Cho Seungmin had been beaten by Kohei Samba in the corresponding semi-final (11-6, 7-11, 11-5, 9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8).

A bronze medal for Hung Ka Tak in the Boys’ Singles event, in the Boys’ Doubles it was gold.

He partnered Song Xu to victory; the pair ousting the combination of Puerto Rico’s Brian Afanador and Argentina’s Fermin Tenti in the semi-finals (11-5, 5-11, 11-7, 11-3), before overcoming top seeds, Cho Seungmin and Kohei Sambe in the final (8-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-7).

Gold and bronze on the concluding day for Hung Ka Tak, for Leung Tsz Ching it was silver. For Soo Wai Yam bronze.

Partnering Adina Diaconu, the pair caused the biggest upset of the day. At the semi-final stage the beat second seeds, Thailand’s Tamolwan Khetkuen who partnered Soo Wai Yam (11-7, 11-8, 11-8) to progress to the final, where top seeds, He Zhuojia and Mima Ito (11-8, 11-9, 11-3).

On the final day it was four medal for Hong Kong; one gold, one silver and two bronze.
