2014 Spanish Open - Gold for Hong Kong, Tang Peng Guides Wong Chun Ting to Almeria Title

At the start of the year he was listed at no.112 on the Men’s World Rankings, in fact that was the highest of his career; now he is named at no.37, he is also the Men’s Doubles champion at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open.

Wong Chun Ting, a right handed athletic pen-hold grip attacking player who uses both sides of the racket in the modern mode, is the revelation of the year; his results outstanding, he has established himself in the Hong Kong first team.

In Almeria, late on the afternoon of Sunday 6th April, he won the Men’s Doubles title in partnership with the more experienced Tang Pang; Wong Chun Ting is 22 years old, Tang Peng is 33 years of age.

Beat Top Seeds
Occupying the no.3 seeded position in the draw, they beat the top seeds, Chinese Taipei’s Chuang Chih-Yuan and Huang Sheng-Sheng in the final (11-2, 2-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7) to claim their first such title as a partnership.

Success with Jiang Tianyi
A first as a partnership but with their colleague, Jiang Tianyi, both have enjoyed previous ITTF World Tour Men’s Doubles success.

Wong Chun Tiang partnered Jiang Tianyi to success at the GAC Group 2012 ITTF World Tour German Open; whilst in 2012, Tang Peng succeeded with the same player.

He won in Austria with Wong Chun Ting and most significantly at the KAL Cup ITTF World Tour Grand Finals in the Korean capital city of Seoul at the end of the year.

Runners Up Again
Success for Tang Peng and Wong Chun Ting; for Chiang Hung-Chih and Huang Sheng-Sheng, the winner of the Boys’ Doubles title at the World Junior Championships in Linz, Austria in 2005, for the third time this year the second step of the medal podium was their lot.

At the GAC Group 2013 ITTF World Tour Grand Finals staged in Dubai in January they were beaten in the final by Singapore’s Gao Ning and Li Hu (6-11, 12-10, 12-10, 8-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9); the following month in February at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Kuwait Open they experienced the same fate.

They were defeated in the gold medal match by the combination of Austria’s Stefan Fegerl and China’s Lin Gaoyuan (5-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-3, 11-7).

Same Fate
In Almeria it was the same fate; gold belonged to Hong Kong, gold belonged to Tang Peng and Wong Chun Ting.
