Review - GAC Group 2015 ITTF World Tour Qatar Open

Hong Kong Duo Too Experienced, Vladimir Samsonov Regains Title

Winners on three previous occasions as a partnership, having enjoyed success in China and Chile in 2008, as well as in Spain in 2011; Hong Kong’s Jiang Huajun and Tie Yana won the Women’s Doubles title at the GAC Group 2015 ITTF World Tour Qatar Open in Doha on the evening of Sunday 22nd February.

At the final hurdle they beat Singapore’s Li Ye and Zhou Yihan; the duo competing in their first ITTF World Women’s Doubles final.

Jiang Huajun and Tie Yana emerged successful in three straight games (11-3, 11-9, 11-8)

It was the one success for Asia on the concluding day of play in Doha.

The winner in 2003, Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus won the Men’s Singles title beating Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov, the top seed at the final hurdle.

Occupying the fourth seeded position in the draw; a five games success was posted to close the curtain on the six day tournament (11-9, 11-8, 15-13, 6-11, 11-9).

“Dima and myself, we know each other so well, we both play for the same club in the Russian League”, saidd Vladimir Samsonov. “I wanted to win, I won in 2003 but I didn’t expect to win this year; Qatar is always a strong tournament and this year I played well from the very start.”

Earlier at the semi-final stage, Dimitrij Ovtcharov had accounted for Portugal’s Marcos Freitas, the no.3 seed (11-2, 10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 9-11, 11-8), before Vladimir Samsonov followed suit. He overcame Chinese Taipei’s Chuang Chih-Yuan, the no.2 seed (13-11, 14-12, 11-5, 11-7).

Meanwhile, Romania’s Elizabeta Samara won the Women’s Singles title, the no.7 seed, she upset the order of merit by beating Germany’s Han Ying, the no.3 seed at the final hurdle.

Impressively, Elizabeta Samara succeeded in four straight games 11-6, 12-10, 11-6, 11-9).

At the semi-final stage Han Ying had beaten Singapore’s Feng Tianwei, the top seed, saving match point on two occasions in the deciding seventh game (6-11, 8-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-7, 5-11, 12), before somewhat in a less traumatic manner Elizabeta Samara had ousted Korea’s Yang Haeun, the no.10 seed in five games (11-5, 10-12, 11-7, 11-6, 11-5).

“I’d played Han Ying twice before; in the Team event at European Championships in Shwechat and then in the European Champions League”, said Elizabeta Samara. “At the European Championships I had match point when leading two-one and lost; in the same year in the European Champions League, I had no chance.”

Success for Elizabeta Samara, in the Men’s Doubles event it was success for the combination of Portugal’s Marcos Freitas and Croatia’s Andrej Gacina.

Not seeded, they accounted for the Brazilian partnership of Hugo Calderano and Gustavo Tsuboi, the eighth seeds, at the final hurdle (11-3, 11-5, 12-10).

Defeat for the Brazilians but solace in the fact that they are the first Latin American to reach and an ITTF World Tour Super Series final.
