2014 Asian Games - Silver Medal for Jiang Tianyi and Lee Ho Ching

Surprise winners of the Mixed Doubles title the Liebherr 2013 World Championships in Paris, the DPR Korean partnership of Kim Hyok Bong and Kim Jong added to their collection of silverware on Friday 3rd October.

 

They won the Mixed Doubles title at the 2014 Asian Games in the Korea city of Incheon, accounting for Hong Kong’s Jiang Tianyi and Lee Ho Ching in the final.

 

Impressively, Kim Hyok Bong and Kim Jong recorded a five games win (12-10, 12-10, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6).

 

Success for Kim Hyok Bong and Kim Jong over pairing from Hong Kong and somewhat less dramatic than the previous occasion when they had confronted a partnership from the Special Administrative Region of China.

 

At the Liebherr 2013 World Championships, at the semi-final stage of the Mixed Doubles event, they were on the very precipice of defeat against Cheung Yuk and Jian Huajun.

 

No margin for error, they recovered from a three games to nil reverse to win a close fourth game before advancing to record a full distance win (11-13, 9-11, 12-14, 14-12, 11-8, 11-4, 11-7).

 

Throughout the final, the right handed Kim Hyok Bong and the left handed Kim Jong had the support of the crowd.

 

The locals from the Republic of Korea shouted “We are”, the response from the those had travelled across the border from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea responded “One”.

 

Success for Kim Hyok Bong and Kim Jong; similar to the scenes on the podium in Paris, there were emotional scenes as tears filled the eyes of the champion.

 

"In 2013 when we became World Champions, we got a lot of love from our people and we were very thankful”, said Kim Hyok Bong. “We wanted to win the gold medal here again to get the feeling of love from our people again, as well as repay them for all the support that they have given us, which made us very emotional."

 

Silver for Hong Kong in the Mixed Doubles event, in the Women’s Doubles it was bronze. Lee Ho Ching and Ng Wing Nam suffered a semi-final defeat against China’s Chen Meng and Zhu Yuling, the champions elect  (4-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-4, 11-4).
