2014 Asian Junior & Cadet Championships - Bronze Medals for Hong Kong Girls in Mumbai, Doo Hoi Kem Outstanding

Hong Kong secured bronze medals in both the Junior Girls’ Team and the Cadet Girls’ Team events at the Reliance 2014 Asian Junior Championships in Mumbai, India on Saturday 13th September.

Silver medallist in the Women’s Singles event at the recently concluded Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, Doo Hoi Kem was the mainstay of Hong Kong’s success in the Junior Girls’ Team event.

She remained unbeaten as Hong Kong topped their group finishing ahead of Chinese Taipei (Huang Yu-Chiao, Chiu Ssu-Hua, Huang Yu-Wen) and Sri Lanka (Ruvini Kannangara, Muthumati Salpahdoru, Thedini Uththamawadu).

A quarter-final place secured they overcame the Indian trio Sayaka Mukherjee, Ayhika Mukherjee and Priyadarshini Das y three matches to one with Doo Hoi Kem simply outstanding.

She beat Sagarika Mukherjee (11-5, 11-7, 11-6) and Ayhika Mukherjee (11-5, 11-9, 11-7), with the one further Hong Kong success coming from Lam Yee Lok, in the second match of the contest she accounted for Priyadarshini Das (11-6, 11-5, 11-6).

The one win for India recorded by Ayika Mukherjee; in the second match of the fixture, she overcame Minnie Soo Wai Yam by the very narrowest of margins (11-8, 7-11, 12-10, 9-11, 12-10).

Two wins from Doo Hoi Kem against India; it was the same in the three-two semi-final reverse in opposition to Japan.

Impressively and with a touch of class, Doo Hoi Kem overcame Sakura Mori (11-1, 12-10, 9-11, 11-5) and Hitomi Sato (5-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-7) but alas that was to be the sum total of success for Hong Kong.

Minnie Soo Wai Yam was beaten by both Hitomi Sato (16-14, 11-3, 11-5) and Sakura Mori (11-9, 13-11, 11-8), with Lam Yee Lok suffering defeat in the third match of the fixture against Miyu Maeda (11-6, 11-8, 11-6).

The third step of the podium for Doo Hoi Kem, Minnie Soo Wai Yam and Lam Yee Lok; it was the same for Lee Ka Yee and Ng Ka Man in the Cadet Girls’ Team event.

They finished in first place in their group ahead of Singapore (Eunice Lim, Zhang Wanling) and Iran (Mahshid Ashtari, Fatemehzahra Mokhtarraziaei) before recording a quarter-final success against Thailand.

A three-nil win was recorded against Thailand but it was a hard fought three-nil win; every contest went the full five match distance.

Lee Ka Yee beat Monapsorn Saritsapirak (8-11, 11-6, 11-2, 9-11, 11-6) before Leung Ka Wan followed suit by overcoming Cathereeya Poungsri (16-14, 10-12, 11-4, 12-14, 11-3) to extend the advantage.

Matters concluded with Lee Ka Yee and Leung Ka Wan recording a doubles win over Cathereeya Poungsri and Monapsorn Saritsapirak (11-8, 7-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-8).

A place in the penultimate round booked but it was to be the end of the road; a three-nil defeat was experienced at the hands of China.

Lee Ka Yee was beaten by Qian Tianyi (11-9, 11-1, 11-3), Ng Ka Man suffered at the hands of Sun Yingsha (11-2, 11-5, 11-5) before a doubles reverse for Lee ka Yee and Ng Ka Man at the hands of Qian Tianyi and Sun Yingsha ended matters.
